Western Collector Magazine

INDEX OF PAST ISSUES - September, 1963 to May, 1972

Introduction
by Cecil Munsey

The first bottle collecting club was formed, in Sacramento (California), in 1959.  That organization was the “Antique Bottle Collectors Association” led by John C. Tibbitts who produced the nation’s first bottle club newsletter – “The Pontil.”

Western Collector magazine was a national magazine.  The first to provide regular coverage of the newly “club-organized bottle collecting” hobby.  It was published from 1963 to 1972 and claimed a subscription base of almost 20,000 when it was ultimately purchased by The Antique Trader Weekly in 1972.

The magazine’s first bottle collecting article was “Bottle Collecting” by Ed Hughes.  Most of the early authors had or would write important bottle books* (see asterisk after appropriate last names).  Among the early writers was Otha D. Wearin*, an ex-congressman who was an expert on figural and milk glass bottles.  Another early writer who was an antiques expert in many areas, including antique bottles – Clarence T. Hubbard.  He wrote the first of many articles for the magazine in July of 1964.

Adele Reed* wrote the first article (June, 1965) in the magazine to chronicle a bottle show, “Historic Bishop [California] Bottle Workshop.”  In December of 1965, Hall of Fame member, Bob Ferraro*  co-authored an article on small and large bottles.

In the first issue of 1966, publisher Paul Evans* wrote about the “Buoyant Bottle Boom.”  In the same year, Grace Kendrick* wrote the first of her numerous articles and columns for the magazine over the years.  In April, 1966 the magazine began to regularly devote a third of the publication to a section called, “Bottle World.”  Hall of Fame member, John C. Fountain*, began a monthly column in April.  The Jim Beam craze was started in the magazine with an article by Al  Cembura*.   Honor Roll honoree, Lew Roach reviewed bottle books for the magazine.  Also in 1966, Honor Roll honoree, Dr. Julian H. Toulouse* began his technical articles on glass manufacturing and  Helen Ellsberg introduced fruit jars to the hobby.

The following year, Jean Loerke began writing about figural bottles.  In May of 1967, Claire T. McClellan introduced insulators to bottle collecting.  Later that year, Hall of Fame member Dr. Cecil Munsey* introduced bottle collectors to the collecting of Coca-Cola memorabilia – the article later became (after “…Collecting Bottles” ) the basis of his second best-selling collecting book.  Charles Gardner  wrote for “Western Collector” magazine that year.  Millicent Holmberg* joined other authors (Hubbard, Wearin and Loerke) in writing about figural bottles.

In March, 1968 Bill Gaylord began a series of nineteen articles about “Advertiques,” a word he coined himself.  Advertiques are the many related items that are collected along with old bottles.  During the same year Constance Avery* wrote the first article on Luxardo bottles.  Dr. Pauline Rosen* wrote the first-ever articles on using antique bottles for flower arranging.  Dr. Cecil Munsey* became “Associate Editor” of the magazine in September 1968 and was responsible for bottle collecting content.

Early in 1969, “Western Collector” magazine published its first book.  The volume was devoted entirely to the collecting of Avon Bottles; Cecil Munsey and Millicent Holmberg were co-authors.  Over the years, the book went through almost a dozen editions.  Dr. Burton Spiller began his popular monthly column, “Bottles East” in the April 1969 issue.  The collecting of milk bottles was inaugurated with “Milk and its Containers” by Thomas F. Gallagher, II and Cecil Munsey*.  The first monthly column about insulators was initiated by Greg Kareofelas* in the December issue.

1970 began with a monthly column servicing the newly formed Federation of Historical Bottle Clubs – “FOHBC News.”  The Federation used Western Collector as its official publication until it was able to arrange to have its own newsletter.  Dorothy May became the Avon bottle columnist in 1970.

Robert Snyder* introduced miniature bottles to readers in May,1971.
